#7 Terriers dropped a heart-breaker to #3 BC, 1-0 in overtime, when the Eagles'Alex Tuch’s screened wrister eluded Sean Maguire, who had been brilliant all night. The senior netminder stopped 41 shots and was at his best in the first period, keeping BU in the game when BC fired 23 shots on goal.

For his dazzling performance in the tournament, Maguire was named Beanpot MVP. He also won the Eberly Award for top goaltending save percentage in the tournament, having turned aside 65 of 67 shots in two games, many in spectacular fashion. However, the trophy he wanted most went home with the Eagles.

Commenting on the game-winning goal, Maguire said: “I think if I saw all of it, I would’ve stopped it.”  He added:

“I wanted to win this really bad this year. This is my last attempt, and I gave it my best effort, but it definitely wasn’t the outcome I wanted.”
The outcome was the first 1-0 result in Beanpot Tournament history.

Ty Amonte commits to BU; David Quinn podcast

Thayer Academy forward Ty Amonte (photo, #12) has committed to BU and will join the 2017 recruit class. The 5-11, 185 lb., right wing is the son of former Terrier standout, NHL star and US Olympian Tony Amonte, who is Thayer’s head coach.  Now a senior, Amonte is expected to spend next season in the USHL with Youngtown, for whom he suited up twice this season. He also made two starts for the NTDP U18s.

Amonte is the third son of a former Terrier currently in BU’s recruiting pipeline, joining 2016 recruit Chad Krys (former BU captain Mark Krys) and fellow 2017 recruit Brady Tkachuk (Keith Tkachuk).

In 20 prep games this season, he has a 12-30-42 scoring line, putting him among the top scorers in New England prep hockey. Last season, he had 40 points in 30 games for the Tigers.

This past fall, he scored 12 points in 14 games for the Cape Cod Whalers and set up the game-winning goal in the Massachusetts Midget U18 Championship game.  The Whalers will play in Nationals this spring in San Jose.

A growth spurt in the last year coincided with Amonte’s improved on-ice skills. Following last June’s Teal Invite Tournament, USHR wrote:
Ty Amonte, #3 East Coast Kings/Thayer Academy, ’98 – Had an excellent weekend. Played physically along the walls and scored several nice breakaway goals against the Minnesota Blades on Saturday night. Amonte’s game is taking a leap toward the next level. Will be at the Select 17 Camp starting Saturday in Buffalo. Top returning scorer at Thayer with a 10-30-40 line in 30 GP. Will be a senior

After the Midget U18 title game last November, SB Nation's Jeff Cox tweeted: “the improvement from Ty Amonte is remarkable. He's a whole diff player, was terrific in all 3 zones, w, w/o puck.”

More recently, USHR noted that Amonte "competes hard and is a two-way guy who has a good shot, and can make plays. His skating is good but lacks explosiveness."

Amonte, who joins a 2017 recruit class that includes forwards Patrick Harper, Hank Crone and Tkachuk and defenseman David Farrance, was one of eight Massachusetts high school players to make the NHL Central Scouting Players-to-Watch list last fall, earning a C rating.

► Head Coach David Quinn discusses transition hockey for USA Hockey

Looking back
Charlie Coyle scored his 13th goal of the season for the Wild who fell to Washington, 4-3.
NHL.com recap and video

While three future Terriers will be in action at the Youth Olympics in Lilliehammer, Norway, Team USA looks back at the first Youth Olympic games in  2012 when Jack Eichel tied for the scoring lead for the U.S.

This Date in BU Hockey
1973: Boston University defeated Boston College, 4-1, in the Beanpot Championship game to tie the Eagles for the most titles with eight, and to become the first team to win four straight. The Terriers opened the scoring on a power play goal by Vic Stanfield at 14:53 of the first, the only goal of the period. Midway through the second period,  BU scored twice less than 2 minutes apart when All-American Steve Dolloff (photo) scored at 10:13 and Ken Kuzyk scored at 11:54. The Eagles made it 3-1 just 25 seconds later when Mike Powers scored, but that was the only goal BU goalie Ed Walsh would allow. In the third, Dolloff scored his second of the game at 4:12 of the period to give BU a 4-1 lead that would hold up the rest of the way.

Freshman Jordan Greenway deflected home a Matt Grzelcyk wrist shot for a power play goal, giving #7 Terriers a 2-1 overtime win against #11 Lowell at Agganis Arena. With the win, BU inches closer to earning a first-round bye in the Hockey East playoffs.

BU trails third-place Providence by two points and fourth-place Lowell by one and has two games in hand vs. Lowell. The teams meet again at Tsongas Arena in Lowell at 7 p.m.
●  GoRiverHawksTV (PPV); Terrier Sports Radio Network; Live In-Game Blog

The tight-checking game became a battle of hot goaltenders with BU’s Sean Maguireand Lowell’s Kevin Boyle turning aside every scoring chance until late in the second period. Freshman Charlie McAvoy’s headman pass sprung Mike Moran, who broke in on Boyle and beat him through the five hole. It was the senior’s second goal in a week.

The narrow lead held until midway through the final period when a mix-up between Maguire and sophomore defenseman John MacLeod allowed Lowell’s Ryan Dmowski to grab a loose put behind the BU goal. Maguire made the initial save, but AJ White flipped the rebound past the sprawled goalie to knot the score at 1-1.

After both teams had some grade A chances during the final minutes of regulation, Dmowski drew an offensive-zone boarding penalty with half a minute left. BU didn’t connect in the final seconds of the period, but once overtime began, the Terriers quickly set up in the River Hawks’ zone.  Senior Ahti Oksanen slid the puck to Grzelcyk, who sent a wrist shot toward the goal. Greenway, perfectly positioned outside the crease, redirected the puck past Boyle for his fifth goal of the season and his first game-winner as a Terrier.

The 6-5 forward, who earned first-star honors, has 16 points (5G, 11A) in the last 16 games, beginning with his game-tying goal against Cornell in Red Hot Hockey 5.

Maguire turned aside 25 shots to gain his 10th victory of the season.

Head Coach David Quinn remarked:

“It’s playoff hockey from here on in, and that certainly had a playoff feel to it. Every inch was contested for … a low-scoring game … I thought we had had some great chances we weren’t able to capitalize on, and they did, too."

►The victory was BU’s 11th on home ice this season, one more than a year ago.

Zink hat trick doubles up BU

A night after Friday’s tight defensive game, BU and Lowell found the net nine times with the host River Hawks scoring early and often for a 6-3 victory. The loss left BU still in fifth place in Hockey East, trailing Lowell by three points.

The RiverHawks opened the scoring midway through the first period on what would be the first of three Dylan Zink goals. BU responded less than two minutes later with Bobo Carpenter’s eighth goal, but Zink struck again with a slap shot from the point.

Things got worse in the second period as Lowell tallied three times, despite an 18-11 BU shot advantage. Zink completed his hat trick three minutes in prompting BU to pull Sean Maguire in favor of Connor LaCouvee and then Adam Chapie, who sat out Friday’s game due to a suspension, scored twice within nine seconds.  BU narrowed the margin to 5-2 late in the period on Oskar Andrén’s second goal.

AJ White extend the lead back to four goals late in the third period before Brandon Fortunato’s fifth goal of the season closed out the scoring.

BU Head Coach David Quinn

“Well, congratulate Lowell, great effort by them. Certainly disappointed with obviously the outcome and some of the reasons why we’re in the situation we’re in tonight.  It just seemed like every mistake we made ended up in the back of our net.”

BU has four regular-season games remaining: a home-and-home with New Hampshire next weekend and then a pair of contests at Notre Dame.

Senior Danny O'Regan recorded his second career hat trick, but a late New Hampshire goal knotted the score at 3-3, forcing BU to settle for a disappointing tie at the Whittemore Center in Durham.

Following a scoreless first period in which BU outshot the Wildcats 12-3, Terriers got on the board just 12 seconds into the second period. O'Regan took a feed from Jordan Greenway and wristed it past Daniel Tirone, with Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson also assisting. The senior from Needham struck again at 6:41 on a power play with assists to captain Matt Grzelcyk and Charlie McAvoy. But UNH answered quickly with a goal by Jamie Hill and again on a power play goal by Michael McNicholas.

BU pressed the attack in the third period, firing 15 shots on goal and finally broke the tie at 17:28 with O'Regan's third goal, assisted by Greenway and Forsbacka Karlsson. Just half minute later, the Wildcats took advantage of a Terrier turnover and Maxim Gaudrault scored the equalizer. BU dominated overtime but couldn't put one past Tirone, who made 37 saves and earned first-star honors.

Connor LaCouvee, who  turned aside 19 shots, started in place of Sean Maguire, who reportedly suffered a hand injury. Defenseman Brandon Hickey left the game late in the second period with an apparent leg injury after being slammed into the boards and did not return in the final period.

Strong start powers BU past New Hampshire, 3-2

#9 BU defeated New Hampshire, 3-2, on Senior Night at Agganis Arena and the win pulled the Terriers into a fourth place tie with Lowell.  Terriers received goals from captain Matt Grzelcyk, assistant captain Danny O’Regan and Bobo Carpenter, along with a strong goaltending effort from Connor LaCouvee.

After LaCouvee foiled a New Hampshire shorthanded breakaway, BU took the lead when Grezelcyk’s wrist shot bounced past Daniel Tirone, with Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and Charlie McAvoy assisting. Terriers doubled the lead with a power play goal when Shane Switzer found O’Regan all alone at the back door for a shot that glanced off the goalie and into the net.

Terriers struck again with the man-advantage in the second period. Brandon Fortunato’s shot off a Jordan Greenway pass was blocked but Carpenter corralled the puck and backhanded a sharp-angle shot past Tirone for a 3-0 lead.  After two periods, BU had a 30-10 shots lead.

BU eased up on the attack in the third and the Wildcats struck for a pair of goals in the first seven minutes from Aza Nazarian and Cameron Marks—the first on a goal-mouth rebound and the second on a hard wrist shot from the circle to LaCouvee’s right. Terriers had numerous chances to extend the lead, but the best opportunities either missed the net or were stopped by Tirone. The final minute became a bit dicey when a penalty to BU and a pulled goal gave UNH a 6-on-four advantage, but LaCouvee held the fort and picked up his first win in a start since November.

Terriers recognized six seniors in a pregame ceremony: Grzelcyk, O'Regan, Matt Lane, Ahti Oksanen, Mike Moran and Sean Maguire

Maguire missed his second consecutive game with a hand injury. Also out of the line-up were Brandon Hickey--injured in Friday's contest--and Robbie Baillargeon, who was injured in practice.

► In the final weekend of regular-season action, BU travels to Notre Dame for a pair, while Lowell has a home-and-home against BC. If the Terriers and River Hawks remain tied in points, BU will earn fourth place and a first-round bye.

WEEI College Hockey Puckcast: Scott McLaughlin talks with Head Coach David Quinn about the upcoming series in South Bend against Notre Dame. Discussing a trio of injured Terriers, Quinn indicated that things are looking good for junior Robbie Baillargeon and sophomore Brandon Hickey to return this weekend, while senior Sean Maguire, who has practiced, remains day-to-day.

Three Terrier centers are in the top 10 in face off percentage in Hockey East games: #4 Jacob Forsbacka Karlsson (.585), #6 Bobo Carpenter(.580) and #10 Mike Moran (.557). Overall, BU is 2nd in the conference and 5th in Division 1.

Terriers edge Notre Dame; regular-season finale tonight

#9 Terriers, with a goal in each period and a stellar effort from senior goalie Sean Maguire, edged #10 Notre Dame at the Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend. With the win, BU assumes sole possession of fourth place in Hockey East, two points ahead of Lowell and two behind the third-place Irish.

The teams meet again Saturday night at 7 p.m. and the game will again air on NBC Sports Network. A BU win would give the Terriers the third seed in the conference tournament; a loss would leave them either fourth or fifth depending on the outcome of the BC-Lowell game.

BU got on the board with senior Ahti Oksanen’s power play goal, assisted by senior assistant captain Danny O’Regan and freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson. Notre Dame tied the score on its own power play with just 6.6 second left in the first period when Connor Hurley buried a rebound.

Terriers regained the lead early in the second when sophomore Chase Phelps’ strong offensive move got the puck into the Irish crease where senior Mike Moran flicked it past Cal Peterson.  Midway through the third period, freshman Jordan Greenway found classmate Charlie McAvoy for a one-timer that beat Peterson, who was screened by Forsbacka Karlsson.

BU kept its hosts in check for most of the third period, but with time winding down, Notre Dame began getting pucks to the BU net and finally scored an extra-attacker goal with 1:32 remaining to narrow the margin to 3-2. In the final half minute, junior Doyle Somerby kept the puck pinned to the end boards as the seconds ticked off and O’Regan tied up an Irish forward attempting a shot as the buzzer sounded.

Maguire, returning from the injury that forced him to miss the last two games, was stellar in goal, stopping 33 of 35 shots, including 25 in the final two periods and several highlight reel saves. He earned the game’s first star.

O’Regan earned the third star. With assists on BU’s first and third goals, he now has 148 points, the most by any Terrier since Chris Drury.

The win was BU’s first against Notre Dame since the Irish joined Hockey East.

#9 Terriers dropped a tough 1-0 decision to #10 Notre Dame last night in the regular-season finale.  With the loss, BU finishes tied with Lowell with 28 points, but loses the tie-breaker to the River Hawks, who beat BC last night. As a result, BU gets the fifth seed, with no first-round bye. Instead, BU will face UMass in a best-of-three series at Agganis Arena beginning next Friday.

BU outshot the Irish, 39 to 28, but were unable to dent goalie Cal Peterson. Sean Maguire kept the Terriers within striking distance, stopping 27 shots.

The game’s only goal was scored by Dylan Malmquist on a power play midway through the second period.  Conversely, Notre Dame did a good job bottling up the Terriers on two full power plays plus another 18 seconds, limiting BU to just four shots.

BU concludes the regular-season with a 19-10-5 record and is tied with Notre Dame for ninth in the PairWise rankings.
