Late power play goal pushes Eagles past BU

In a game where most of the goals came from special teams, a late power play goal by BC’s Ian McCoshen proved to be the game-winner as the Eagles defeated BU, 5-3, at Conte Forum. The first meeting of the season between the Commonwealth Avenue rivals featured five power play goals and a penalty shot.

BU’s best period was the first as it outshot the Eagles 7-5 and scored the only goal on a man advantage. Freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson’s sixth goal on a wrist shot from the high slot followed a pair of “five-foot passes” from captain Matt Grzelcyk and Ahti Oksanen.

Early in the second period, Austin Cangelosi was tripped on a breakaway and the Eagle center converted a penalty shot.  BU retook the lead on the ensuing play as JFK was taken down behind the BC goal line, but on the delayed penalty call he managed to slide the puck to Oksanen at the corner of the net. The Finnish wing buried it for his 11th goal of the season.

Exactly three minutes later, BC’s Zach Sanford backhanded home a rebound after Sean Maguire had made the initial save on a slapshot. Then, late in the period, BC’s Colin White scored a power play goal to give the home team its first lead, 3-2.

Both teams produced multiple scoring chances in an up-and-down third period before the Terriers scored the equalizer at 15:48 on another power play. Freshman Charlie McAvoy set up assistant captain Matt Lane in the high slot for a one-timer that hit BC goalie Thatcher Demko and bounced into the net.

Two minutes later, BC went on the final power play of the game and produced the game-winner as McCoshen’s blast from the point sailed past a screened Maguire. An empty-net goal, also from McCoshen, closed the scoring.

Despite the closely played game, Coach David Quinnexpressed his dissatisfaction with BU’s performance:

“A frustrating loss. I thought we took a step back. I thought we were slow. I thought we were soft … just way too many odd-man rushes, and just not an awful lot to like about our game tonight.”

► With his goal and assist, Oksanen reached the career 100-point mark. He is the third European player to reach that milestone at BU, joining Tommi Degerman and Petteri Koskiimaki.

► Along with Oksanen, JFK and assistant captain Danny O'Regan had two-point nights.

Terriers settle for 1-1 with Eagles

$

Unlike Friday when power plays sent pucks flying into the nets, Saturday’s BU-BC rematch at Agganis Arena was a classic goaltending duel, resulting in a 1-1 overtime tie. A crowd of 6,032 saw the Terriers take a lead midway through the second period and hold it until the Eagles finally ended senior Sean Maguire’s shutout attempt with 2:05 left in regulation.

There was no shortage of scoring opportunities as the teams combined for 24 shots in the first period, when both teams had 5-on-3 opportunities, and then 28 in the second with Maguire and BC’s Thatcher Demko both making highlight-reel saves.

BU broke through when freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson’s rush from his own end was denied at the goalmouth by Demko, but a clearing pass was intercepted at the point by senior assistant captain Danny O’Regan. His slap shot was deflected past Demko by senior captain Matt Grzelcyk.

“I saw JFK going in on the breakaway there, just kind of followed the play in case there’s a bounce,” Grzelcyk said. “Puck made its way up the wall, and Danny made a heads-up play to throw it to the net, just tried to get a stick on it. A little bit of puck luck there.”

Shots were harder to come by in the third period—five for BU and eight for BC.  With about three minutes remaining, Maguire robbed BC’s Adam Gilmour with a lunging save; but 49 seconds later, the Eagles’ Ryan Fitzgerald was set up in the circle to Maguire’s left and his turnaround wrist shot found its way into the goal high on the stick side.

A late stuff-in attempt by JFK, set up by sophomore Brandon Fortunato, was turned aside by Demko and neither team could find the back of the net during the five-minute overtime..

Maguire, who made a season-high 38 saves to earn first-star honors, stymied the Eagles on a number of two-on-one-breaks and bailed out his teammates following a turnover behind the goal.

Coach David Quinn, who was much happier with his team’s performance than he was on Friday, especially his goalie’s stellar effort:

“He played great last night, too. He’s been getting better and better. The great thing over the weekend is we got elite goaltending, and that certainly bodes well going forward.

“It’s disappointing the way both games ended. We were two and a half minutes away from at least getting a point, and tonight we’re two and a half minutes away from getting a win, so disappointing from that regard, but it’s January 15th, and you don’t want to be playing your best hockey now.”

After playing his entire freshman season and his first 19 games this season without taking a single penalty, Fortunato found himself in the penalty box in each of the weekend games.

SB Nation/Hockey East: What we learned last weekend

There were certainly some very positive signs for David Quinn's group, namely the stellar play from senior goaltender Sean Maguire. The Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick made 70 saves on 75 shots on the weekend, but several were of the jaw dropping variety. Before allowing the goal late in Saturday's contest, he was absolutely spectacular to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.

Terriers grind it out, defeat Maine, 5-2--UPDATED

Behind a pair of goals by senior Ahti Oksanen and another strong goaltending performance by senior Sean Maguire, #11 Terriers won the first half of the home-and-home series with Maine, 5-2, at Alfond Arena in Orono.  The Finnish winger and his linemates, senior Matt Lane and freshman Jordan Greenway combined for six points, and BU also received goals from captain Matt Grzelcyk, senior Mike Moran and freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson.

The teams came out firing with a combined 28 shots in the first period, but BU scored the only goal when Grzelcyk’s shot from the point sailed past goalie Matt Morris who was screened by Forsbacka Karlsson.Grzelcyk now has eight goals in just 11 games.

Early in the second, Greenway outmuscled Maine defenders behind the Black Bears’ cage and slid the puck across the crease to Oksanen for a tap-in goal. The home team responded two minutes later on a power play when Cam Brown got behind the BU defense and put a backhander past Maguire. Midway through the period some pretty passing by Greenway and Oksanen sent the puck to Moran in the slot. He kicked the puck to his stick and backhanded a shot past Morris for his first goal of the season.

Photo by Maddie Malhotra, Daily Free Press
Less than a minute into the third period Forsbacka Karlsson found the rebound of a Brandon Fortunato shot and converted it for his seventh goal of the season for a 4-1 lead. Late in the period, Blaine Byron popped home a rebound with just two seconds left on a Maine power play. Oksanen followed with his team-high 13thgoal, aided by Greenway’s third assist of the game.

Commenting on Oksanen and Greenway, Coach David Quinn, who earned his 50th win as Terriers' head coach, remarked:

“Those are big, NHL bodies [and] don’t get me wrong, they have stick skills, too, but if they’re moving their feet it’s going to be very difficult for anyone to defend them."

"This was one of our better performances.  We did a great job pressuring the puck. We were a difficult team to play against tonight. This is not an easy place to play. Maine is well-coached and it’s no fun to play them. But I loved the way our guys stuck with it.”

Maguire turned aside 32 Maine shots including a few point blank attempts as Maine generated numerous grade A chances.

Once again, Greenway was a force along the boards and behind the Maine net in a grinding game that suits his style. The 6-5 wing from Potsdam, N.Y., who had just two points in his first 13 games, has tallied two goals and nine assists in the last ten games.

BU’s fourth line pressured Maine all night. In addition to Moran’s goal, junior Tommy Kelley had five shots.

For the first time since the late '80s, BU has a winning record at Alfond Arena— (24-23-7).

The teams conclude the series tonight at Agganis Arena with puck drop at 7 p.m.

Carpenter & Lane power BU to a weekend sweep

Putting together one of its most complete efforts of the season, BU took an early 2-0 lead against Maine and never looked back, routing the Black Bears, 6-1, at Agganis Arena. Senior assistant captain Matt Lane and freshman Bobo Carpenter each scored twice, with junior Doyle Somerby and senior Danny O’Regan getting the other two goals.

Passes from Oskar Andrén and Robbie Baillargeon sent Carpenter in alone on Maine goalie Rob McGovern. Carpenter beat the Maine goalie glove side for a lead five minutes into the game. Somerby scored the eventual game-winner 31 seconds later on a wrap-around.

Carpenter scored his second of the game—and seventh of the season— following a terrific entry pass from freshman Charlie McAvoy, who also dealt out several heavy checks.  Then, Lane cashed in a pass from senior Ahti Oksanen to increase the lead to 4-0 before Cam Brown beat Sean Maguire from the high slot to end the netminder’s shutout bid. O’Regan converted the rebound of a Somerby shot late in the second period to stretch the lead to 5-1. Lane’s second goal early in the final period to close the scoring was his 13th, tying him with Oksanen for the team lead.

BU outshot Maine 36-23. Maguire was tested less often than on Friday, but was sharp none-the-less, making 22 saves.

Summing up the strong 60-minute performance, Head Coach David Quinn pointed out:

“We were skating; we were pressuring the puck; there was an urgency to our game. One of the things that we’re trying to do is make teams earn ice, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that this weekend”

Lane added:

"We need sweeps, and we need to string together some wins. We know what we’re capable of as a team, and in a sense we didn’t feel we were meeting our standards. This is maybe the first weekend where we’ve played six good periods from start to finish.”

Three stars:  1. Carpenter, 2. Somerby, 3. Lane.
Somerby’s game-winner was his third of the season.
12 Terriers—eight forwards and four defensemen—have reached double figures in points.
Andrén gained his first points as a Terrier, assisting on Carpenter’s first and Lane’s second.
Lane and Carpenter also led BU’s dominance in the face off circle, winning nine draws apiece, as BU took 35 of 55 draws.
After yielding two power play goals Friday night, BU had six successful penalty kills on Saturday.

Senior Ahti Oksanen, who on Monday was named Hockey East Player of the Week, added more recognition for his two-goal, four-assist performance against Maine as one of the NCAA’s three stars of the week.  ESPN's John Buccigross tweeted that the top four goal-scorers in Division 1 over the past two seasons are: Harvard's Jimmy Vesey (46) and Oksanen (38), tied with Omaha's Austin Ortega and Quinnipiac's Sam Anas.

SB Nation's Cox has also put together a list of the top 10 NHL prospect defenseman currently in Hockey East and it includes McAvoy, sophomore Brandon Hickey (photo), senior captain Matt Grzelcyk and junior Doyle Somerby, who comprise two-thirds of BU’s starting defense corps.

A new video from State Champs! Power Play has an NTDP focus with interviews featuring 2016 recruits Chad Krys, Kieffer Bellows and Clayton Keller, along with game action featuring a goal from Bellows for the U18s and 2018 recruit Logan Cockerill for the U17s.

2016 recruit Dante Fabbro skated for Team West in last night’s CJHL Top Prospects game in Surrey, British Columbia. The right-shot defenseman has a 10-38-48 line in 33 games and leads all BCHL defensemen in points-per-game (1.45) by a wide margin.

2017 recruit Patrick Harper scored a goal and two assists--including setting up the game-winner as Avon Old Farms edged Loomis-Chaffee, 4-3. The top-ranked Winged Beavers extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games and their record to 13-1-2, while Harper upped his team-leading points total to 41 (12G, 29A) in 16 games.

2018 recruit Tyler Weiss (photo) roofed a backhand shot for his 19th goal of the season, but the Don Mills Flyers fell to the Junior Canadians, 3-2, in GTHL action. The Raleigh, North Carolina native has a team-leading 35 points (19G, 16A) in 25 games.

2019 recruit Case McCarthy is ranked #3 by PrioritySelection in its initial rankings for the 2017 OHL entry draft. McCarthy, a Clarence, New York native who plays for the GTHL Mississauga Rebels, is a right-shot defenseman with size and strong offensive upside.

Looking back
Jack Eichel scored his 15th and 16thgoals of the season to spark a Sabres’ comeback win against Ottawa, 3-2. The former BU MVP and All-American, who scored the game-winner and earned first-star honors, now has 34 points, second best among NHL rookies.  Eichel has 20 points in his last 18 games, and with three two-goal games already, he’s tied with Patrick Kane and Steven Stamkos on the list of most multiple-goal games as a rookie.

No Terriers made the score sheet in last night’s 2-0 Penguins win over the Devils, but a pair of BU alums were calling the shots behind the benches. John Hynes is in his first season as New Jersey’s head coach, while Mike Sullivan (photo) was elevated to Pittsburgh’s top spot earlier this season. Former Terriers and current Penguins Nick Bonino and David Warsofsky both sat out with injuries. Ten seasons ago, Sullivan was behind the Bruins bench for several games against the Islanders, coached by former BU All-American and captain of the 1971 national championship team Steve Stirling

Adam Clendening has been claimed on waivers by the Edmonton Oilers. Earlier this month, the Penguins had traded him to Anaheim. Previous NHL stops included Chicago and Vancouver. He’s made 30 NHL starts.

IBUH #14: Quinn, Oksanen, Drury; Maguire revival

Episode 14 of Inside BU Hockey features Bernie Corbett’s interviews with Head Coach David Quinn, senior wing Ahti Oksanen and two-time first-team All-American and 1998 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner Chris Drury.

Oksanen, the current Hockey East Player of the Week, is the team’s co-leader in goals this season with 13 and is second in points with 27. A converted defenseman who made the switch to forward a year ago, his next goal will be the 50th of his Terrier career.  Oksanen is expected to be one of the most pursued free agents when he completes his BU career.

Drury is the only player to have won the Hobey Baker Award and the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. At BU, where he is the program’s all-time goal-scoring leader with 113 and third in all-time points (214), he played for the 1995 national championship team and in two subsequent Frozen Fours.  A proven clutch performer throughout his career, he played 12 NHL seasons with four teams (Colorado, Calgary, Buffalo, Rangers), winning the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2001 and scoring more than 300 goals between regular season and playoff games.

Drury represented the United States in three Winter Olympiads, winning silver in 2002 and 2010. A 2003 inductee into the BU Athletics Hall of Fame, he was inducted last month into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. In September, he rejoined the Rangers as Director of Player Development.

#9/10 Terriers take on Merrimack tonight at Agganis Arena with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. BU dropped a 4-3 decision to the Warriors earlier in the season and will be looking to avoid a repeat and to gain an important two points in the Hockey East race.

The game, which will be streamed on TerrierTV (subscription), marks BU’s Annual AutismAwareness Night, highlighted by a silentauction for the Autism Speaks jersey wornby Jack Eichel during last season's Autism Awareness game. BU hockey has supported Autism Speaks through numerous activities since 2004 and its players wear the Autism Speaks logo on their jerseys.

After a strong start to the season, Merrimack has struggled in recent weeks, losing the last nine straight and winning just once in the last 14 games. Their offense is led by seniors Brian Christie (18 points) and Ben Bahe (15) and junior Hampus Gustafsson (15), while Collin Deliahas handled most of the netminding duties.

Since second semester began, BU has enjoyed its best scoring balance of the season from its forwards. First liners Danny O’Regan and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson have 28 and 22 points respectively, while Matt Lane (photo) and Ahti Oksanen have powered the line with 13 goals apiece. Third line center Bobo Carpenter, who has five goals in his last eight games and linemate Robbie Baillargeon now are in double figures with 10 points each.

The Daily Free Press tweeted that newcomer Oskar Andrén, who scored his first points as a Terrier last Saturday against Maine, will join JFK and O’Regan on the top line tonight. Senior Sean Maguire is expected to make his eighth consecutive start in goal.

Seniors lead the way as Terriers stifle Warriors

#9/10 Terriers picked up their third straight conference win, blanking Merrimack, 4-0, at Agganis Arena behind goals by junior Robbie Baillargeon and seniors Danny O’Regan, Matt Lane and Ahti Oksanen.

Senior Sean Maguire stopped all 27 shots he faced, but wasn’t credited with either a shutout or a win. Just over one minute into the first period, he had to leave the game for skate repairs, and was replaced by sophomore Connor LaCouvee, who made just one save in his five minute-and-49 seconds relief stint. During that stretch Baillargeon completed a pretty passing play, ripping home a Lane feed from the left faceoff circle dot for what proved to be the game-winner and the only goal in a penalty-filled opening period.

Merrimack had four minutes of power play time in the second period, but it was the Terriers who found the net as O’Regan stole a pass in the center zone, broke through two defenders and scored a shorthander that gave BU a 2-0 lead. In the third, BU’s current goal-scoring co-leaders both struck: Lane converting his own rebound and Oksanen, whose empty-netter was his 50th career goal. Both have a team best 14 scores this season.

Maguire made several difficult saves late in the game, along with 10 power play saves, to preserve the team shutout.

Commenting on LaCouvee’s “six-minute win,” Coach David Quinn said:

“I realized it when we were walking around shaking hands. Connor got dealt a bad hand a couple of times last year. We put him in at New Hampshire when we were down 3-0, and they scored right away to make it 4-0. Then we scored three goals to make it 4-3, and he got a loss. That happened a couple of times last year.”

While Maguirewasn't credited with the win or a shutout, he did earn first-star honors for yet another strong performance. O'Regan and Brien Diffley were the second and third stars. Diffley assisted on the Baillargeon and Lane goals for his first multiple-point game this season.

In the final minutes, Captain Matt Grzelcyk passed up several opportunities at the empty-net to set up shots for Lane and Oksanen.

In the third period, O’Regan nearly duplicated his goal, breaking through the Merrimack defense again, but was denied by the Warriors’ Collin Delia.

Beanpot: Terriers defeat NU, will face BC in final--UPDATED

#9 BU earned the right to defend its Beanpot title with a 3-1 victory over Northeastern at TD Garden. The Terriers, who will face BC in next Monday’s final, received first-period goals from junior Robbie Baillargeonand freshman Charlie McAvoy, an empty-netter from junior Doyle Somerby and another extremely sharp effort in goal by senior Sean Maguire .

In addition to propelling BU into next week’s final, the victory—the Terriers’ 15th of the season—achieve a program milestone: 1,500 wins since the Terriers first took to the ice in 1917. BU will play in the Beanpot championship game for the 28th time in the past 33 seasons.

BU got on the board at 13:14 of the first when freshman Ryan Cloonan kept a puck alive in the Huskies zone, leading to two shots by freshman Bobo Carpenter. The second deflected into the air to goalie Ryan Ruck’s right and Baillargeon batted it home. Three-and-a-half minutes later, freshman Oskar Andrén’s pass sent senior Danny O’Regan into the NU zone, where he dropped the puck to McAvoy, who blasted a shot into the top left corner past a partially screened goalie.

Maguire, coming off last Friday’s 4-0 shutout of Merrimack, held Northeastern at bay until late in the third period, stopping 24 shots, including a Mike McMurtry  breakaway in the first period. The Huskies finally broke through after pulling Ruck for an extra attacker. Maguire made a pad stop on a shot from the point, but an unchecked John Stevens slid the rebound under him. Two minutes later, with NU pressing for the equalizer, Somerby cleared the puck with a 180-foot shot that went dead-center into the empty net.

Ruck was immense in goal for Northeastern keeping BU from extending its lead on breakaways by O’Regan and freshman Jordan Greenway and denying a Matt Lane one-timer from the right circle on a power play that seemed labeled. Cloonan nearly added to the lead in the third period when his backhander rang off the crossbar.

BU coach David Quinn was pleased with his team’s performance:
“Just a really good team effort — from start to finish, we were ready to play. I thought our forwards had a good night, our ‘D’ corps had a good night, our goalie had a good night.”
McAvoy, whose goal proved to be the game-winner, reflected on his first Beanpot experience:
“Coming in, you choose to go to a school like BU to play in the Beanpot and it was everything that it was hyped up to be.”

Episode 15 of Inside BU Hockey features Bernie Corbett's interviews with Coach David Quinn, freshman defenseman Charlie McAvoy and Dennis O'Connell, captain of the 1965-66 Terriers. The youngest of the Terriers also is the youngest player in Division 1 this season, McAvoy has 13 points (2G, 11A) this season including his game-winning goal (video) in Monday's Beanpot opener. The Long Beach, N.Y., native was the top-scoring defenseman for the NTDP U18s last season with 40 points and, along with fellow freshman Jordan Greenway, won a gold medal in the IIHF World U18 Championships.  Last month, McAvoy and sophomore Brandon Fortunato skated for the U.S. bronze medal winning team at the World Junior Championships.

The duo of Clayton Kellerand Kieffer Bellowshas been unstoppable, and that’s good news for both NTDP and Boston University. The two Terrier commits are both well over a point-per-game pace with Keller averaging 2.00 Pt/G and Bellows at 1.59 Pt/G. Bellows capped off his weekend with four goals, and two game-winning goals in a back-to-back set. Just as impressive has been the play of 2017 NHL Draft eligible goaltender Jake Oettinger. The Lakeville, MN native is chasing every Team USA USHL goaltending single season record including John Gibson’s 2010-11 USHL season record for save percentage (.926%), Thatcher Demko and Jack Campell’s GAA record (2.21) and Demko’s 2012-13 record for most wins (15). With seven games remaining Oettinger is 10-1-0-0 with a 2.16 GAA and .925 SV%.

USA Hockey spoke with 2017 recruit Brady Tkachuk about how father, former Terrier, NHL standout and US Olympian Keith Tkachuk, and brother Matthew Tkachuk helped the NTDP U17 power forward develop his game.

2018 recruit and Tkachuk’s teammate on the U17s Logan Cockerill is featured in the current edition of MIHockeyNow Magazine.

2018 recruit Tyler Weiss scored twice in the Don Mills Flyers 5-2 winover the Junior Canadians in game four of their GTHL playoff series. Freshman Jordan Greenway scored the game’s first and last goals and sophomore Chase Phelps had a goal and an assist as the Terriers doubled up Massachusetts, 6-3 at the Mullins Center.  BU scored three early goals and later extended to a 5-1 lead before the Minutemen scored two third-period goals.

Hardworking Greenway put BU on the board just 57 seconds into the game, banging home the rebound of a Brandon Hickey shot. Less than two minutes later, Phelps finished off passes from junior Tommy Kelley and captain Matt Grzelcyk with a wrap-around goal. That early assault prompted UMass Coach John Micheletto to replace goalie Henry Dill with Nic Renyard, but the move didn’t slow down the Terriers as senior Mike Moran, assisted by Phelps, scored on a sharp-angle shot.

UMass cut the lead to 3-1 when Ray Pigozzi found a loose puck in the crease for a power play goal—one that Coach David Quinn felt should have been disallowed because the whistle had blown. Terriers matched that one in the final minute of the first period when senior assistant captain Danny O’Regan found freshman Oskar Andrén (photo) in the slot for a quick wrister that was the Stockholm native’s first collegiate goal as well as the game-winner.

O’Regan scored the second period’s only goal deflecting freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson’s shot past Renyard. In the third period, the Minutemen scored twice in a one-minute span. The first was a power play goal by Dominic Trento, whose sharp-angle shot seemed to surprise senior goalie Sean Maguire; the second was scored by Joseph Widmar on a goal-mouth scramble. Greenway closed the scoring, stuffing the puck home following a UMass turnover.

First-star honors went to O’Regan, who has a team-leading 32 points. Greenway was the second star and Phelps was the third.

BU’s faceoff dominance, winning 41 of 63, was a key factor in the puck possession advantage BU enjoyed throughout most of the game.
