#9 Terriers defeated UMass, 2-1, in the opening game of their best-of-three first-round series at Agganis Arena. BU needed the full 60 minutes plus 9:34 of overtime before freshman Bobo Carpenter’s second goal of the game ended things.

The teams meet again tonight with BU looking to eliminate the Minutemen. Game time is 7 p.m.  Links for the live-stream, radio and GameTracker are here.

Despite a 15-7 BU shot advantage, UMass took a first-period lead when captain Steven Iacobellis took a pass in the left-wing circle, cut past a defender to the goalmouth and put a forehand shot past senior Sean Maguire.

Terriers tied the game early in the second when senior assistant captain Matt Lane chased down the rebound of his own shot and centered it to Carpenter for a backhand finish. BU nearly took a lead early in the third when freshman Charlie McAvoy’s pass sent senior assistant captain Danny O’Regan in alone, but goalie Nic Renyard stoned him with one of his 46 saves. Later in the period, Renyard stopped a point blank chance for senior Ahti Oksanen, who’d been set up by Lane.

Six-and-a-half minutes into overtime, Maguire made a pair of sparkling saves on Ray Pigozzi as BU drew a penalty. During the ensuing kill, BU had a great chance for a shorthanded goal, but freshman Jordan Greenway’s pass bounced over O’Regan’s stick. The game-winning sequence began when sophomore Brandon Fortunatosent a shot on net with Oksanen attempting to screen Renyard. The Finnish forward slipped the rebound to Carpenter who had driven to the net and scored on the forehand.

Reynard earned the game’s first star; Carpenter was the 2ndstar and Maguire, who stopped 29 shots, was 3rd.

Carpenter, who was promoted to second line center for last night's game, has scored nine of his 11 goals in the last 19 games.

Maguire, who lowered his GAA to 2.09 and improved his save percentage to .930, has yield one goal or less in eight of his last 12 starts.

BU had a decided advantage on draws led by Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, who won 16 of 22 faceoffs.

Terriers eliminate UMass, 5-4; Women advance to conference title game

Two goals apiece by senior assistant captain Danny O’Reganand freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and four assists by freshman Charlie McAvoy led #9 BU to a 5-4 win over a stubborn UMass squad at Agganis Arena. The win gave the Terriers a two-game sweep of its opening round series and they now move on to to a best-of-three quarterfinal against Lowell at Tsongas Arena.

On the heels of Friday night’s defensive battle, last night’s contest saw BU take the lead four times only to have the Minutemen respond to tie the game each time before JFK scored the game-winner. The center from Stockholm also scored the game’s first goal, assisted by O’Regan and freshman Jordan Greenway. Later in the opening period, Dennis Kravchenko’s rip from the high slot tied the score at 1-1.

In the second period, BU scored a power play goal as captain Matt Grzelcyk’s cross ice pass was one-timed from the left-wing circle by O’Regan. Thirteen seconds after BU killed a UMass power play, Shane Walsh beat senior Sean Maguire from close range to restore the deadlock. Just a minute later, McAvoy set up Grzelcyk for a wrist shot from the left point that beat Nic Renyard, who was screened by Bobo Carpenter.

The Minutemen answered on the power play at 17:50 of the second when Kurt Keats converted a centering pass at the goalmouth, but BU responded quickly. Greenway controlled the puck along the end boards and found O’Regan driving to the net for his second of the night and 16th of the season, giving BU a 4-3 lead after two periods.

Four minutes into the third period, UMass knotted the score yet again. Maguire blocked a long slapshot, but Austin Plevy beat the BU defense to the rebound for a goal. The game-winner came with eight minutes left in regulation when O’Regan set up McAvoy for a shot from the high slot that hit a defender. JFK corralled the rebound and, on his second attempt, beat Renyard to the glove side.

With two assists to go with his two goals, O’Regan has 152 career points, becoming the 18th Terrier to exceed 150. The San Jose draft pick leads the team in goals with 16 and points with 42. Head Coach David Quinn noted that“His best hockey has been the last six weeks and he stepped up big tonight.”

Karlsson’s pair of goals broke a 12-game scoring drought for the freshman, leading Quinn to comment:
"He was hard on the puck, he really was elusive, did a lot of good things, made some good passes, I thought he had a really good night."

McAvoy’s four assists give him 20 for the season and 23 points.

The victory was the final game of the season at Agganis, where BU racked up a 14-2-2 record.

Lowell tops BU, 3-2, in QF opener

Power plays proved to be the deciding factor as the #8 Terriers dropped a 3-2 decision to #11 Lowell in the opener of the best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinals. The River Hawks capitalized on two of four man-advantage opportunities, while the Terriers didn’t score on its two chances.

After a scoreless first period, BU took the lead when Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson took a Danny O’Regan pass in the left circle, closed toward the net and beat goalie Kevin Boyle. Minutes later, Lowell answered on the power play when Joe Gambardella took an entry pass at the left post and beat Sean Maguire.

Terriers dominated shots in the third period, 18 to six, and nearly regained the lead when Bobo Carpenter set up Matt Lane at the goalmouth, but the assistant captain was robbed by Boyle. Midway through the period, a neutral-ice turnover led to Michael Louria’s goal from the high slot that deflected off a defender and eluded Maguire. Lowell extended the lead to 3-1 with its second power play goal as Adam Chapie, all alone to Maguire’s right, converted a cross-ice pass.

Just 23 seconds later, BU cut the margin to one when Bobo Carpenter redirected captain Matt Grzelcyk’s wrist shot from the point. Terriers pressed for the equalizer and pulled Maguire with about two minutes left, but Boyle slammed the door to preserve the win for Lowell.

Commenting on BU’s special teams problems, Head Coach David Quinn said:

“Our penalty kill let us down. It’s going to have to get better tomorrow night if we’re going to have a chance to extend the series. You can’t allow a cross-ice pass like that to a guy standing all alone on the backdoor. We had a lot of puck-watching and weren’t alert. On both their [power-play] goals, we blew our responsibility.”

BU had a 35-19 shot advantage and also dominated in the faceoff circle where Forsbacka Karlsson won 20 of 28 draws.

Facing elimination from the Hockey East Tournament, the #8 Terriers turned in a disappointing performance and were shut out by #11 Lowell, 5-0, as the River Hawks completed a two-game sweep. BU is still likely to receive a bid to the NCAA tournament but won’t know more until next weekend.

Lowell scored once in the first period, twice in the second and twice again in the third.
Coach David Quinn pulled Sean Maguire in favor of Connor LaCouvee following the River Hawks’ second goal, but it did little to stem the tide.

CJ Smith scored twice for Lowell while Jake Kamrass contributed a goal and an assist. Goalie Kevin Boyle authored a school-record seventh shutout for the season, earning first-star honors.

Quinn remarked: “They’re a better hockey team than we are right now. Their goals came way too easy and we couldn’t get one. We’ve got to become a more mature hockey team before our next game.”

March 22, 1997:Chris Drury's goal at 12:20 of overtime gave Boston University a 4-3 win over Denver in the NCAA East Regional Final in Worcester. The second-seeded Terriers (Clarkson was the #1 seed) had taken a 3-2 lead with 3:19 left in regulation on Shawn Bates' shorthanded breakaway goal. However, the Pioneers forced overtime with an extra-attacker goal by Eric Anderson, beating Michel Laroque with 53 seconds left. In the overtime, skating 3-on-3, Chris Kelleher took a pass from Jon Coleman and fired a shot from the left point. Drury was locked up with a Denver defender in front of the net, but gained control and slid the rebound past tournament MVP Jim Mullin and then leaped into the glass in celebration.

Drury's goal was his 37th of the season. BU hadn't won a game all season in which Drury didn't get a point and he'd been held scoreless in regulation. Current associate head coach Albie O'Connell scored the first two goals for BU, which would go on to upset defending champion Michigan in the Frozen Four semis before losing to North Dakota in the final.
