Terriers add forward Oskar Andren to roster for second semester

With depth issues at forward following Ahti Oksanen’s injury and AJ Greer’s departure, BU has added Swedish right wing Oskar Andren to the roster, beginning with second semester. The 6’1”, 185 lb. left-shot forward is in his second season with the NAHL Lone Star Brahmas, where he was the second leading scorer with an 8-14-22 scoring line in 28  games. In his rookie NAHL season, he had an 18-29-47 line in 51 games, including a four-goal game against Wenatchee.

Andren spent the previous three seasons with Djurgarden in Sweden’s Elit and SuperElit leagues and has experience in international events.

Brahmas’ Head Coach Dan Wildfong said:
"Andren went through a lot and when the scholarship came, to reach that goal, we were all excited.  We trusted him and believed in him and we're proud of him. He couldn't have asked for a better school."

The Danderyd, Sweden native has been in talks with Boston's Associate Head Coach Albie O'Connell for a few weeks and the recruiting process concluded during the road trip to Wichita Falls this weekend.

"We told him to trust us. I've seen Oskar improve every day in his board work and defensive play. He's going to be really good up there."

NCAA suspends Roberto amid gambling investigation

$

Rumors that have recently surrounded the Terrier hockey program came to fruition when it was revealed that junior forward Nick Roberto, who has yet to play a game this season, has been suspended for the season by the NCAA.

Although Federal privacy laws prevent BU from commenting further on Roberto, the university’s statement indicates that it had become aware that a student-athlete had gambled on games (not college or pro hockey) the previous season, had investigated the matter and turned its findings over to the NCAA, which “took remedial action.”

Roberto remains a member of the team and reportedly is eligible to play next season. The suspension is a second hit to the BU roster in a week after sophomore wing AJ Greer left school to play junior hockey in the QMJHL. The Terriers bolstered the roster on Sunday gaining a commitment for the second semester from Lone Star Brahmas (NAHL) right wing Oskar Andren

Roberto has scored 11 goals and 19 assists in two seasons.

Dante Fabbro, D – Penticton Vees (BCHL): Jost and Fabbro will get mentioned together a lot this year and both are enticing prospects. Fabbro is a smart, confident blueliner who controlled the puck more than most forwards in the WJAC game I attended and locally, he is killin’ it with the Vees to the tune of 38 points in 24 games. Fabbro is a Boston University commit.

BU has made its second mid-season roster addition as quick, skilled left wing Erik Udahl announced he’s coming aboard. A 1996 birthdate, the 5’8”, 165 lb., Walpole, Mass., native has been skating for the BCHL Coquitlam Express with a 7-4-11 scoring line in 33 games.

Earlier this month, BU added Swedish wing Oskar Andren, who had been playing for the NAHL Lone Star Brahmas.

Udahl spent the 2011-12 season at The Rivers School, playing for former Terrier All-American Shawn McEachern, before joining the Tier 1 Boston Advantage program for two campaigns, scoring 54 points for the U16 team and then 39 for the U18s.

USHR: Fall 2013 Tier 1 Elite Showcase

5. Erik Udahl, F, 3/31/96 (#7/Boston Advantage) 5-9/175 -- Udahl was one of the best forwards in the U18 division this weekend. Had a spectacular game in a 3-2 overtime win over Victory Honda. Udahl carried the puck over the blue line and bought time and space for himself, finding a teammate coming late to tie the game in the third period. He followed that up by tipping in the game-winning goal on a shot from the point. The knock on Udahl has always been his size, but he may be a nice energy player for a team willing to take a chance. Played at Rivers before going to the Boston Advantage last year.

Last season, Udahl played for the BCHL Langley Rivermen, scoring 19 points.

High-end 2001 defender commits to BU; WJC report--UPDATED

BU gained its third commitment in the past month from a high-end 2001 birthdate player, as Shattuck St. Mary’s defenseman Braden Doyle tweeted his commitment.  The 5-10 left-shot blueliner from Lynnfield, Mass., who has a 7-23-30 scoring line in 35 games, joins fellow 2001s Robert Mastrosimone and Case McCarthy as future Terriers. He reportedly made his decision between BU and BC.

Doyle, who previously played for the Minuteman Flames, was a standout at June’s Beantown NAPS Showcase, earning a strong review from USHR:

Braden Doyle, #8 East Coast Selects, ’01 – A high-end defenseman in all aspects of the game, Doyle skates well, passes the puck crisply and accurately, and can shoot it. He’s poised with the puck in his defensive zone and has the ability to beat defenders with a pass or his feet.  Played for the Minuteman Flames last year and will be heading to Shattuck-St. Mary’s this fall.

Later in the summer, he earned kudos from OverTheBoards at the SFX 68 event in Chicago:

01 DBraden Doyle– Shattuck-St. Mary’s U14: Very offensively aware, makes the right play most of the time, at the right times. Utilizes deception in possession effectively and makes decisive reads all over the ice. Processes the game as it develops at a good clip compared to some of the best in his age group. He can really skate, too, as you’ll see when his top speed is needed to prevent a chance in the video below.

USCHO’s Tim Costello sat down with retiring Bowdoin coach—and former Terrier co-captain (1975-76) Terry Meagher—about his 33 seasons behind the Polar Bears’ bench and the program’s future.  Earlier this season, Meagher’s Bowdoin team played rival Colby in a game marked by the endowment of the White Mules' coaching position for former Terrier head coach Jack Kelley.  Meagher, whose brothers Rick and Tony, also starred for BU, remarked:

“To be a part of the Kelley/Parker coaching tree is something I treasure as part of a very special fraternity involved with a great game and great traditions.”

John McCarthy, a co-captain of BU’s 2009 national champions, scored his fourth goal of the season in the San Jose Barracudas’ 4-3 winover Stockton. McCarthy, who has had several stints with the San Jose Sharks, has 14 points in 29 games for the AHL affiliate.

Seniors rally Terriers past Harvard, 6-5--UPDATED

#11 Terriers scored four times in the third period—three in a 2:09 span— to complete one of their most memorable third-period comebacks—perhaps the best since the DC Miracle in 2009—to defeat #4/5 Harvard, 6-5, at nearby Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

Senior Ahti Oksanen, returning after a serious injury against Quinnipiac last month, scored the game-winner with 1:49 left in regulation, just 55 seconds after senior assistant captain Danny O’Regan’s second goal of the game knotted the score at five apiece. And just a minute earlier, senior captain Matt Grzelcyk, also returning from an injury, had brought BU within a goal with a power play blast.

It took the Terriers more than 30 minutes to shake off the rust of a 26-day layoff since that 4-1 win over Quinnipiac and it didn’t help that the Crimson came out flying. They outshot BU 18-2 in the opening period, but only scored once—a power play goal by Jimmy Vesey—thanks to some exceptional saves by Sean Maguire.

Senior assistant captain Matt Lane scored twice in the middle period, but each one was followed in short order by a Sean Malone goal, resulting in a 3-2 Harvard lead after two.
Jake Horton’s bad-angle goal early in the third extended the margin before O’Regan’s first, on a power play, brought BU within one again. At the exact mid-point of the period, Kyle Criscuoloscored from the crease to restore the two-goal margin. A critical Harvard penalty at 14:49 set the stage for BU to fashion its improbable comeback with Grzelcyk’s third goal of the season, O’Regan’s seventh and Oksanen’s 10th, on a Lane feed, delivering the victory.

“When the game started out, we were terrible,” Head Coach Quinn said. “As the period went on, we went from terrible to awful. Then we closed the first period out with being less awful. Then when the second period started, we were bad. Then we got to not so bad. Then it got to OK and then it got to pretty good. Then in the third period, I just thought we played a lot better hockey. … We’ve been a resilient group all year. Just a great win.”

► Terriers are now 8-4-1 in games at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

► With his two goals, O’Regan moved ahead of his father, Tom O’Regan, on the all-time BU scoring list with 131. Lane, with 2G and 1A for his second three-point game in the past four games, also racked up his second consecutive two-goal game.

► All six goals were scored by seniors.

Following Thursday’s win over Harvard, BU is ninth in the PairWise rankings, in large part due to strength of schedule and quality wins.

Looking ahead
A pair of goals by 2016 recruit Clayton Keller led the NTDP U18s past Sioux Falls.  The left-shot center from Swansea, Illinois who has a team-best 63 points (21G, 42A), extended his scoring streak to 12 games (8G, 20A) and has points in 27 of 31 games.

2019 recruit Joel Farabee assisted on four goals in Selects Academy's 12-3 win against Springfield in USPHL 16U action.  The 5-10 playmaker from CIcero, NY has a 6-13-19 scoring line in 10 league games.

►International Scouting Services’ January Top 30 for the 2016 draft ranked one current and four future Terriers as first-round picks: Kieffer Bellows (15), Dante Fabbro (16),  Keller (17), Charlie McAvoy (20) and Chad Krys (22).

Looking back
Evan Rodrigues scored a goal and added two assists as AHL Rochester edged Hershey, 5-4. Chris Bourque had an assist for Hershey.  Rodrigues, whose 61 points last season was second best in Division 1, now has 12 points in 32 games for Sabres’ affiliate Rochester.

Women’s Team
Terriers host #1 BC in a 3 p.m. start at Walter Brown Arena. The teams met on Nov. 10 at Conte Forum, where the Eagles came away with a 4-3 overtime win. BU, which last played on Dec. 10, is led by sophomores Victoria Bach and Rebecca Leslie (photo) who each have 27 points. Earlier this week, Bach and Leslie played for Canada’s National Women’s Development Team, which won the gold medal at the Nations Cup in Fussen, Germany.  Bach scored a goal in the 4-3 overtime win over Finland in the title game.

Grzelcyk hat trick powers Terriers past UMass

Senior captain Matt Grzelcyk broke a 2-2 tie on a wrist shot from the left point and then added two more goals to power the #11 Terriers past UMass, 7-2, at Agganis Arena. The natural hat trick doubled the goal-scoring output for the All-American defenseman who has been limited to eight starts due to injuries.  Twelve Terriers had at least one point as BU improved its record to 11-6-3, with its third consecutive win.

As in the two previous wins, BU yielded the first goal when an unmarked Shane Walsh snapped a rebound past Sean Maguire, just 2:50 into the game. Freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson tied the score late in the period when he corralled a puck behind the Minuteman goal line and banked it off netminder Alex Wakaluk. Midway through the second period, freshman Bobo Carpenter backhanded home the rebound of a Nikolas Olsson shot, completing a play that began with Carpenter rushing the puck down the left side and cutting to the net.

The visitors struck back exactly one minute later with Steven Iacobellis converted a centering pass at the top of the crease to even the score at two apiece. Just 20 seconds later, Grzelcyk bought himself space at the blueline and wristed a shot past Wakaluk— who was screened by junior Robbie Baillargeon—to put BU on top for good.  Still in the second period, Grzelcyk one-timed a Brandon Fortunato pass from the right point for a power play goal.

Just 18 seconds into the third period, Grzelcyk took a pass from assistant captain Danny O’Regan and blasted a 40-footer past Wakaluk, high to the glove side, to complete the hat trick. At 13:07, freshman Charlie McAvoy found Baillargeon at the bottom of the right circle for a wrist shot that upped the lead to 6-2.  Freshman Jordan Greenway closed out the scoring on a short-handed breakaway that he finished by beating Wakaluk to the stick side.

A very pleased Head Coach David Quinn said:

“We were a little sluggish in the first five minutes. I thought we really started knuckling down and doing a much better job of managing the puck, playing the puck, and doing the job in our end. … Seven goals is great, but the thing I really like is we gave up five shots in the third period.”
Grzelcyk’s hat trick was the first by a BU defenseman since Ryan Whitney and Kevin Schaeffer achieved it in the same game against Yale on Nov. 30, 2003.

Game stars went to 1. Grzelcyk, 2., McAvoy, and 3. Baillargeon

Maguire, who earned his third consecutive win and fifth of the season, stopped 25 UMass shots.

BU’s penalty-killers, who limited UMass to just two shots on four power plays, have killed 16 of their opponents last 18 power plays.

Terriers dominated in the faceoff circle winning 38 of 61 draws, led by Forsbacka Karlsson who won 19 of 29.

Among the ex-Terriers at the game was 2009 national championship game Most Outstanding Player Colby Cohen.

With four goals in his first two games back following a knee injury, senior captain Matt Grzelcyk was selected as Hockey East Warrior Player of the Week. The Charlestown native and Bruins’ draft pick scored a goal and assist in BU’s 6-5 come-from-behind win against Harvard and produced a natural hat trick, including the game-winner, in the Terriers’ 7-2 thumping of UMass. Earlier this season, the left-shot defenseman earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after scoring goals in each of his first two games of the season.

Freshmen Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and Charlie McAvoy, just back from the World Junior Championships, were named to Hockey East’s weekly list of Top Performers.

The wins against the Crimson and the Minutemen move BU up a notch to #10 in both the USCHO Weekly Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll.

If you were wondering about the third-period penalty to Harvard that helped spark the BU comeback, it began with McAvoy checking the Crimson's Colin Blackwell, whose chose the wrong words when complaining to the ref. (video). Thirteen seconds later, Grzelcyk’s shot found the back of the net.

“Whatever the situation calls for, you have to pay attention to people on the ice. You just have to [keep your head up]. That’s a mental alertness. And that goes with not staring the puck down when you don’t have it. You have a responsibility every second you’re on the ice. Too often people think their responsibility starts when they get the puck.”
