Terriers shine in 5-1 USA win

Goals by Jordan Greenway and Clayton Keller helped Team USA defeat Canada, 5-1, in the final game of the NJEC Showcase in Plymouth, Michigan. Late in the first period, Greenway doubled the USA lead, scoring an All-Terrier goal, converting Kieffer Bellows’ centering pass. The other assist went to Keller.
Midway through the third period, Keller fired a shot on goal from the top of the left circle, swooped in to collect the rebound and banked it off goalie Evan Cormier for an unassisted goal that upped the U.S. lead to 4-1.

U.S. head coach Bob Motzko, on numerous occasions, employed an effective power play unit that featured four Terriers: Bellows, Keller and Greenway up front with Charlie McAvoy on the right point. McAvoy, the Bruins’ first pick in the June draft, was a force at both ends of the ice throughout the game and brought the crowd to its feet with a crunching open ice hit on Lawson Crouse.

Defenseman Dante Fabbro was in the Canadian line-up playing effectively and displaying his puck moving skills on the Canadian power play unit.

Goalie Jake Oettinger and blueliner Chad Krys, who played in Friday’s game against Finland, were not active for the final game. Team USA will hold a final selection camp in December before announcing the team that will compete in the World Junior Championships in Toronto and Montreal.

Q&A With the Captain; NCAA freshman rankings

$

With BU’s exhibition game against Prince Edward Island just two weeks away, THFB presents its annual captain’s Q&A, this year with senior defenseman Doyle Somerby

The Marblehead, Mass., native, who captained the 2012-13 Kimball Union Academy squad and was its top-scoring defenseman, is a New York Islanders draft pick (5thround, 2012 NHL draft). Somerby, a journalism major, was second in shots blocked (77) in Hockey East last season and twice was named a Hockey East Top Performer.

Q. As the captain of yet another very young team, with nine freshmen and eight sophomores, what are you and your assistants doing to build team  chemistry?
 A. To build chemistry in my mind, it doesn't matter what you are doing as long as you are together. The comfortability each player has with each other goes a long way throughout the season. So far, we just try and spend as much time throughout the week together, whether that comes from watching football on Saturdays and Sundays together or hanging out after practice. I am lucky enough to live close to campus, so this summer I was able to spend a good amount of time around the incomong freshmen when they were here for summer school.

Q. Since your arrival at BU, not only has your speed improved, but your agility as well. How did you achieve this and what areas are you looking to improve upon personally this season?
 A. Skating is a huge part of our teams success. The forwards that I am able to face on a daily basis are a huge part of my ability to improve year by year. Every summer I work with a guy named Adam Nicholas who has done a lot for me. I skate with him frequently throughout July and August and he is a major factor in my development. Also, the second that coaches are allowed on the ice with us, coach David Quinn has really pushed me throughout the year. His knowledge and experience in every defensive situation is beneficial for my growth as a player. The situations that he puts our defensemen in throughout practice allows us to improve our footwork and defensive play.

►The ISS Scouting Service has issued its ranking of the top NCAA rookies for the 2016-17 season and five of the top 20 are Terrier freshmen. Forwards Clayton Keller and Kieffer Bellows (photo) and defenseman Dante Fabbro were numbers 2,3 and 4 in the ranking. Looking back—Where are they now?
Rhode Island Native John Bradley was a Terrier netminder on the 1990 and 1991 Frozen Four teams, who made 47 starts and won 25 games for BU, including the 4-3 overtime win over Maine in the 1991 Hockey East championship game.

A Sabres draft pick, he played five seasons of minor league hockey, finishing with the Johnstown Chiefs. After serving as an assistant coach at Bishop McCort high school, Bradley assumed the head coaching spot and now begins his 23rd season behind the Crushers’ bench. During that span, he led the team to two Penguin Cup titles and two Pennsylvania state championships.

Bradley, who also owns Ziggy’s Sports in Johnstown, recently purchased—at auction—former Terrier and 1980 Olympic goalie Jim Craig’s leg pads from the “Miracle on Ice” Lake Placid games. The pads are part of a memorabilia display at Ziggy’s.

NHL.com’s preview of tonight’s All-American Prospects Game focuses on those players who also participated in USA Hockey’s National Junior Evaluation Camp last month, including freshman goalie Jake Oettinger.  The AAPG features 42 of the top US-born players eligible for the 2017 NHL draft. Commenting on the 6’4” netminder who had a 25-8-1 record and a 2.38 GAA with the NTDP U18s last season, Central Scouting’s Al Jensen said:

"There's a lot to like about his game. He's a big goalie. Covers a lot of the net. His positional play is very good. He's got a phenomenal butterfly, great rebound control. He's got that NHL net presence when you look at him."

► The AAPG at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center begins at 7 p.m. and is being live-streamed free by FastHockey. [Note: you’ll need to register for a FastHockey account; no charge involved].

AAPG recap; 2018 recruits power U17s; Women’s team hits the ice

BU’s freshman goalie and two 2017 recruits put their skills on display in last night’s All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia, won by Team Leclair, 6-4. Netminder Jake Oettinger played the first 30 minutes for the victors, stopping 12 of 14 shots and displaying the strong positional play and butterfly style that has scouts looking at him as a potential early draft pick in the 2017 NHL entry draft. The Lakeville, Minn. native discussed his AAPG experience and goals for his freshman season in the first in a series of “prospect diary” blogposts he’ll author for NHL.com this season.

Future Terrier Logan Cockerill scored an unassisted goal in the third period to bring Team Howe to within a goal at 5-4. Midway through the period, Cockerill raced down the right side, beating a defenseman and jamming a shot home as he was being hauled down.SB Nation's Jeff Cox observed:

Having that second gear and getting going quickly is key to a player having what it takes to make it to the next level. Boston University recruit Logan Cockerill displayed that ability Thursday night.

His first step was evident several times throughout the game. He had that extra gear to blow by an opposing defenseman on more than one occasion, including his third period goal. He slowed down a little in the neutral zone then just blew by the left defenseman. He eventually was hauled down, but the puck slid into the net.

Defenseman David Farrance was +3 for Team Howe and showed off some slick passing, particularly on power plays. Cockerill and Farrance will be back in action with the NTDP U18s this weekend, along with fellow 2017 recruit Brady Tkachuk, when they host Youngstown.

Game recap
2018 recruit Joel Farabeescored twice and added an assist in the NTDP U17s’ 7-2 win over Muskegon in their home opener. The left-wing from Cicero, N.Y., who last season rang up a 19-30-49 line in 27 games for Selects Academy 16U, was assisted on both goals by fellow recruits Jake Wise and Jack DeBoer.  Left wing Tyler Weiss recorded his sixth assist of the season.  Together the four future Terriers accounted for 2 goals and 6 assists.

2017 recruit Ty Amonte recorded an assist in two Penticton Vees’ wins, 6-4 over Langley and 3-2 over Prince George. The right-shot forward has nine points(3G, 6A) in six BCHL games.

Women’s Team
Ranked #10 in pre-season polls, the BU women’s team gets its season underway this weekend with an exhibition game against the Whitby Wolves on Saturday and the regular-season home opener against Providence Sunday. Senior Maddie Elia’s hat trick and a pair of goals by sophomore Sammy Davis powered BU past the Whitby Wolves in a 6-0 exhibition game win at Walter Brown Arena. The Buffalo News reports that Evan Rodrigues worked with a power-skating instructor and a shooting coach during the off-season as he prepared for Sabres’ training camp. After a slow start last season at AHL Rochester, he produced 30 points, earning a late season call-up and picked up his first NHL goal and assist.

Women’s Team
Senior Samantha Sutherland’s hat trick powered the #10-ranked Terriers to a 5-2 win over Providence in their regular-season opener Sunday at Agganis Arena. BU carried a 2-1 lead into the final period and scored three times to salt away the win.

Graduate student Mary Parker, who starred at Harvard for three seasons, got BU on the board first, converting a pass from junior Victoria Bach, and Sutherland doubled the lead late in the period with assists to sophomore Sammy Davis and freshman Abby Cook. The Friars narrowed the gap to one goal early in the second, but Sutherland responded with a power-play goal from Davis and junior transfer from Minnesota Nina Rodgers.

In the third period, PC scored early again, but a late power-play goal by senior  Maddie Elia and Sutherland’s empty-netter closed out the scoring. Senior goalie Victoria Hansonturned aside 34 of 36 shots to earn the win.

At Hockey East’s Media Day at TD Garden, the conference’s coaches' preseason poll gave BU the top spot with ten out of a possible eleven first place-votes. Defending Hockey East champion Northeastern and lame duck Notre Dame tied for second, followed by Lowell, Providence and BC in the top six. Coach David Quinn told the media:

“We’re a little deeper up front than we have been and I really anticipate (Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson) taking his talent to the next level. But we have a lot of guys like Jordan Greenway and Bobo Carpenter. The guys understand we have competition on the blue line with eight players and there’s going to be two guys who won’t be playing every night. That will elevate the play in practice and the games.”

►Conference Commissioner Joe Bertagna, whose contract was extended through 2019-20, announced that when Notre Dame leaves for the Big Ten, Hockey East will stay at 11 teams for the foreseeable future. In 2017-18, all eleven teams will make the conference playoffs with the top five earning a first-round bye.

►Hockey East also announced a 14-game NESN/ASN TV schedule, which will include three BU games: Jan. 16 at BC; Feb. 17 hosting New Hampshire; and Feb. 24 hosting Notre Dame. The last two games are 6 p.m. starts.

Game Day: Terriers host Prince Edward Island--UPDATED

#4 Terriers will hit the ice tonight for the first of two exhibition games, hosting the Prince Edward Island Panthers at Agganis Arena. Puck drop is a 7 p.m. for the contest, which will air live on the Terrier Sports Radio Network with Bernie Corbett handling play-by-play and Tom Ryan providing analysis. Live-streaming of home games will begin with next Thursday’s exhibition game against the NTDP U18s.

The Panthers have already played two exhibition games against CIS opponents, losing to New Brunswick and defeating Moncton.

Tonight, BU fans will get their first look at the top-rated, nine-member recruit class that includes three NHL first-round draft picks (Clayton Keller, Kieffer Bellows and Dante Fabbro), a second-round choice (Chad Krys) and a fifth-round selection (Patrick Harper), as well a potential 2017 first-rounder (Jake Oettinger).

Coach David Quinn confirmed that all three goalies—Oettinger, junior Connor LaCouveeand sophomore Max Prawdzik—will see action.

BU’s top scorers among returning forwards are sophomores Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson(30 points, photo), Jordan Greenway (21) and Bobo Carpenter (16). On the blue line, sophomore—and Bruins’ 2016 #1 draft pick—Charlie McAvoy (25 points) and senior captain Doyle Somerby (13) lead a group of eight defensemen, including six returnees.

Quinn talked with the Daily Free Press about having the Terriers play fast and dictate each game’s pace:

“When you’re playing fast and decisive, it’s a lot easier for the other four guys to read off you. When there’s hesitation, that’s where there’s indecision. I think if we come with an effort and play fast and skate fast and play through people, that’s what I’m looking for. It’s how consistently we do those things.”

After six games, 2019 recruit Robert Mastrosimone is tied for the scoring lead of the Shattuck St. Mary’s 16U team with seven points. The 5’9” center from East Islip, N.Y. earned strong reviews at this past summer’s Liberty Bell Games. USHR gave him an A+ rating:

A+  Robert Mastrosimone, ’01 F, #14 Freedom (Gray), 5-8/150 – Highly skilled, but also gritty and tenacious. Doesn’t quit on plays. A strong skater who keeps his feet moving. Digs pucks out of dirty areas. As much a playmaker as a finisher. Already committed to Boston University. Scored 111 points for Shattuck’s National Championship U14 team last winter. 4-4-8

USHR gave its only other A+ rating for a forward to Trevor Zegras, who committed to BU in late July.

A+  Trevor Zegras, ’01 F, #2 Ben Franklin (Royal), 5-9/140 – Star potential. Extremely skilled -- athletic, agile, an excellent skater. Terrific shooter and passer. High upside. Played for Mid-Fairfield U14s. 3-4-7

Freshman Harper nets five in 10-2 romp over PEI

The plan had been for Patrick Harper to spend a season in the USHL before arriving on Commonwealth Ave. in 2017. However, after the 5'9", 160 lb. speedster racked up 59 points for Avon Old Farms, earning USHR's Prep Forward of the Year honors, Coach David Quinn and his staff determined he was ready for the jump to Division 1. Last night, Harper put the reasons for their confidence on display for BU fans.

In a penalty-riddled exhibition game at Agganis Arena, the #4-ranked Terriers thumped Prince Edward Island, 10-2, behind Harper’s five goals and two assists and classmate Clayton Keller’s hat trick. Freshman Dante Fabbro and junior Brandon Hickey also found the net for BU.

Seven of the scores were special team goals with the Terriers connecting on six of 11 power plays and on Harper’s third-period shorthander.

Sophomore Charlie McAvoy assisted on four goals while sophomore Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and freshman Chad Krys each recorded three helpers. BU scored four times in both the first and second periods and twice in the third.

Harper opened the scoring by taking a JFK pass at center ice, splitting the defense and roofing a shot at 3:16. Three minutes later, sophomore Jordan Greenway found Keller at the goalmouth and the rout was on.

Junior Connor LaCouvee stopped 11 of 13 shots, yielding two scores on 5-on-3 power plays. Freshman Jake Oettinger (7 saves) and sophomore Max Prawdzik (10) each pitched a shutout period.

BU killed 12 of 14 penalties including several two-man disadvantages. Terriers won 40 of 78 draws with Karlsson and Keller combining for 26 of 38 face-off wins.

Commenting on Harper's performance, captain Doyle Somerby, who, like Harper, came to BU directly from prep school, noted:

"His play speaks for itself, he’s extremely skilled as you guys saw. Five goals is tremendous, but it doesn’t surprise me with the work ethic that he puts in and the skill level that he has and how elusive he can be.”
Three stars: 1. Harper, 2.Keller, 3. McAvoy

Terrier Takeaway

Blog contributor buoldtimer offers the season’s first Terrier Takeaway, following the PEI game:.
While reading these comments, please bear in mind two mitigating factors:
1. The level of competition was far below that of Hockey East.
2. The flow of the game was very uneven and disjointed due to the number of penaltiesthat were called. Nonetheless...
1. BU’s freshman forwards showed high-end speed and finesse, which is easy to say about guys who combined for eight goals.
2. Jake Oettinger stood tall during a couple of five-on-three PK's, including a nice stop on a breakaway and during a major penalty kill.
3. Dante Fabbro and Brandon Hickey (photo) worked well as the point pairings on a couple of power plays. Charlie McAvoy and Chad Krys were the other PP point duo.
4. BU looked a little loose in its own end of the ice.
5. In addition to the power play (which went 6 of 11), McAvoy played a strong game.
6. BU did a nice job on the PK, killing 12 of 14.

The Daily Free Press’s Jonathan Sigal offered three thoughts from Saturday’s win.

The Grand Forks Herald looked at four impact NCAA freshmen—including Keller and Kieffer Bellows—with the potential to emulate Jack Eichel and Michigan's Kyle Conner and lead the nation in scoring as rookies.
