Draft Day: Turning Buffalo Scarlet

The 2016 NHL Entry Draft begins tonight in Buffalo with first-round selections, which are expected to include four Terriers—rising sophomore Charlie McAvoy and incoming freshmen Kieffer Bellows, Dante Fabbro and Clayton Keller (photo). The remaining six rounds are set for Saturday. TV coverage tonight begins at 7 p.m. ET on NBCSN, while Saturday coverage on the NHL Network starts at 10 a.m.

The last time four NCAA players from the same team were picked in the first round was a decade ago in 2006 when Minnesota’s Erik Johnson, Phil Kessel, Kyle Okposo and David Fischer were selected.

Another freshman, Chad Krys, is projected to be a second or third round pick. Other draft eligibles are rising sophomore Bobo Carpenter and incoming freshman Patrick Harper.

There’s been considerable buzz about the teams interested in the four likely first-rounders.  The Bruins are reportedly looking at McAvoy, a Hockey East All-Rookie selection last season, and Fabbro (photo), the top BCHL defenseman and only Junior A player to suit up for Canada’s World U18 squad, to fill their future blueline needs. Keller, who scored 107 points last season and became the NTDP career points leader, may go as high as the top ten, while Bellows, a 50-goal scorer last season, should hear his name called earlier rather than later tonight.

The Terrier coaching staff—head coach David Quinn, associate head coach Albie O’Connelland assistant coach Scott Young—along with Sports Information Director Brian Kelley, is on hand in Buffalo for the draft.

Former Terrier Craig Sanders alerted THFB to several more BU connections to the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. Andy Saucier, who was BU’s video coordinator from 2004 to 2010 and also has been a video coordinator for the US Olympic team, currently handles that position for the Penguins. Saucier is the grandson of legendary Terrier head coach Jack Kelley (photo), who served as president of the Penguins from 1993 to 2001. During the broadcast of game seven, broadcaster Doc Emrick gave a callout to both Saucier and Kelley.

Former Terrier standout and U.S. Olympian Clark Donatelli (Stanley Cup photo) is head coach of Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate in Wilkes Barre/Scranton, having succeeded Mike Sullivan who was promoted to Pens head coach in mid-December and led the team to the Stanley Cup title.

A new name among the forward recruits is right-wing Gabe Chabot from the Rochester Jr. Americans of the USPHL Premier league. The 5-9, 175 native of St. Albert’s, Alberta, who led the Junior Americans in scoring last season with 50 points (19G, 31A) in 44 games, is a converted defenseman who was moved up front last season and blossomed as a right wing. He added three goals in three playoff games.

Chabot, who earned a spot in the USPHL Premier all-star game, previously played for the Portland Junior Pirates in both the Elite and Premier divisions. His father isFrédéric Chabot, a longtime minor league goalie who was drafted by the Devils in 1988 and reached the NHL, playing about 40 games for Montreal, Philadelphia and Los Angeles .

Four first-rounders--UPDATED

As predicted by most prospect evaluators, four Terriers were selected in the first round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. More specifically, four of the first 19 choices--or 21 percent of the first 19. With those selections, BU ties Minnesota in 2006 for the most first-round picks for an NCAA school.

Clayton Keller was the first to hear his named called, at #7 by the Coyotes. The Bruins, focused on defense, selected Charlie McAvoy at #14, followed by Nashville taking Dante Fabbro at #17 and Kieffer Bellows going to the Islanders at #19.

UPDATE: On Day 2 of the draft, a pair of incoming freshmen were selected. Defenseman Chad Krys was nabbed in the second round (#45 overall) by the Blackhawks. Forward Patrick Harper was a fourth-round pick (#138) of Nashville. More news to follow tomorrow. The GoTerriers.com report (link below) now has video interviews with the selected players.

Keller also was the first of a record-tying 11 NCAA players selected and, along with McAvoy and Bellows, comprised 25 percent of the 12 Americans drafted in the first round.

Fabbro, a longtime Nashville fan, had his name called by Predators Assistant GM and former BU standout Paul Fenton. Center Colin Wilson and chief amateur scout Jeff Kealty are two other Terrier connections to Nashville.

Prior to Friday night's first round of the draft, Terrier Head Coach David Quinn talked with Comcast Sports Network/New England about those four players.

Charlie McAvoy, selected 14th overall in the NHL draft by the Bruins, joined Scott McLaughlin for a WEEI off-season puckcast.

► Newsday’s Arthur Staple spoke with Islanders draft pick and 2016-17 Terrier captain Doyle Somerby at the Isles' development camp about his return for his senior year. In a series of Tweet, Staple wrote:

-Also talked w/ Doyle Somerby, who arrived today. Said #Isles were "very understanding and supportive" of decision to stay at Boston U.
-Somerby could become a FA after next season but says that's not his plan. "Finishing my degree is incredibly important to me and my family."
-Somerby is a journalism major at BU. If hockey doesn't pan out he could join the impressive cast of BU alums on an NHL beat.

Kudos for Oettinger; former Terrier D-men sign free-agent deals--UPDATED

InGoalMagazine.comlists 2016 recruit Jake Oettinger second among top goaltending prospects for the 2017 draft. The 6’4”, 201 lb. Minnesota native, who had a 2.38 GAA and a .908 save percentage, along with 25 wins for the NTDP U18s last season, is one of six Terriers on the 42-man roster for the US Junior National Team evaluation camp beginning July 31 in Plymouth, Mich.

A product of the US National Team Development Program, Oettinger is committed to Boston University in 2016-17. He started more games this past season than his teammate and Toronto Maple Leafs’ third-round pick Joseph Woll, and he should go higher in the 2017 draft. He’s bigger, faster, and will be starting college before he is even eligible to be drafted. With Sean Maguire signing a pro contract, the door is wide open for him to start for BU. It is the perfect storm for creating an exceptionally desirable prospect.

He won a bronze medal for the Americans at the U18s, posting very solid numbers (4 GP – 1.50 .934) to make an even stronger case as the top goaltending prospect in his draft class. Not to place any added expectations on him, but the last goaltender that can boast a starting job for a division I NCAA team before the age of 18 has developed into quite the goaltender. Does the name Thatcher Demkoring a bell?

During the recently completed Arizona development camp, Coyotes’ top draft pick, Clayton Keller, talked with Today’s Slapshot  about his expectations for playing at BU:

“There’s great players already there and you see the players that come out of there like (the Buffalo Sabres’) Jack Eichel and (the St. Louis Blues’ Kevin) Shattenkirk,” he said. “It’s definitely a great program.”

“BU is going to play a fast-paced game and hopefully not spend too much time in the defensive zone,” Keller said, smiling. “And I’m not planning on staying for four years. I have other plans.”

That may sound a little brash, but Keller says such talk actually fuels him.

“When there’s a lot of pressure I continue to raise my level of play,” he said. “I’m good under pressure, I’ve always had pressure on me just being a smaller guy. I like it a little bit and just use it as an advantage.”

More than $55,000 was raised at last night’s Comm Ave Charity Classic, held at Walter Brown Arena as former Terriers and Eagles put on a show for the fans.  In a predictably high-scoring contest, BU knotted the score at six apiece early in the third period on a Pete MacArthur goal, but the visitors took charge and pulled away, eventually adding two empty-netters for a 13-8 win.

The fund-raiser benefited Compassionate Care ALS and the Travis Roy Foundation.

Jack Parker was behind the Terrier bench and longtime rival Jerry York coached the BC alums.

“It brings back a lot of memories,” said Chris Higgins, who was part of BU’s 2009 national title team. “In the locker room and on the bench, guys were just talking about the good old days. Greenway shines at Wild development camp; Chowder Cup Terriers

Sophomore Jordan Greenway performance at Minnesota Wild prospect camp has drawn raves from Director of Development Brad Bombardir.  A second-round Wild pick in the 2015 NHL draft, the 6-5 power forward scored 26 points in a strong freshman season.

“I’m just incredibly excited, I think we all are, for the type of player he has become in one year and with the player he may become,” Bombardir said. “The best thing about Jordan is that he knows what type of player he needs to be. How is going to play at the next level? How is that game now translate to what it’s going to translate to in the NHL?”

Bombardir credits the job of BU coach David Quinn and his staff for the job they did in Greenway’s first year of development and said the situation for him with the Terriers is one that should continue to produce results.

“David Quinn is an outstanding coach and he loves Jordan. He really feels that he’s going to be a great player for us, as do I, and as do all of us in the organization,” Bombardir said. “The style of play that BU plays is an NHL style and you can exactly see where he’s going to fit in that and where he fits there and where he fits into the system here.

“And he’s accepted that, ‘This is the type of player I’m going to have to be, and I’m willing to be.’ And he is. He’s a net-front, offensive juggernaut on the wall where he can get pucks and it’s hard for guys to get the puck off him.”

Greenway will join classmate Charlie McAvoy and four incoming freshmen—Kieffer Bellows, Clayton Keller, Chad Krys and Jake Oettinger at USA Hockey’s Junior National Team Evaluation Camp in Plymouth, Michigan, beginning July 30.

►Seven members of the 2016-17 Terriers participated in this past weekend’s John CunniffSenior ChowderCup, skating for the Boston Knights Junior A team. Oettinger was in goal for the Knights.

The 5'10" speedster with high end skills was named all-tournament at this past weekend’s Junior Chowder Cup event, along with 2019 recruit Mastrosimone. Zegras and Mastrosimone each scored a goal for Hockey Essentials White in the ’01 Division championship game, a 3-2 OT loss to Black Squirrel, coached by former BU captain Carl Corazzini.   Zegras had a 3-2-5 scoring line in three ’01 Division games.

Zegras and Mastrosimone did double duty, also skating for ’00 Division champion Hockey Essentials Black, scoring a goal and an assist. Mastrosimone scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in the ’00 title game. In ’01 Division games, he tallied four goals and five assists.

In the recent USA Hockey Select 15 Development Camp, Zegras scored a pair of goals in three games.

A Bedford, N.Y. native, Zegras starred for the Mid-Fairfield Rangers, leading the 14U team to the Tier 1 Youth Nationals (won by Shattuck St. Mary’s with Mastrosimone and Doyle). He skated on the Jr. Rangers’ top line, racking up 65 goalsand 57 assists in 66 games and six points in three games at Nationals.   Next season, Zegras will play for Avon Old Farms, helping to fill the void left by 2016 BU recruit Patrick Harper

OverTheBoards review from 2015 SFX 68 (also reviews Mastrosimone and Doyle):

An incisive, offensively-gifted firebomb who is smaller than many defensemen and comes at the net every which way, almost always with the puck in hand. Highly engaged, great speed and quickness, bursts to separate and is very skilled. Passes the puck with glowing threads when he feels like sharing. Good shot selection on the whole even with a high volume of efforts, creates high quality chances for himself. Shoots left.

Rising junior Brandon Hickey was impressive at Calgary’s development camp. The Flames’ third-round pick in the 2014 NHL draft earned praise from the club’s general manager and scouting director.

He’s looking like a man,” an impressed Flames GM Brad Treliving said of his promising defensive prospect, who has packed on 25 pounds to his 6-foot-2 frame in two short years. “He is a good example of a player who was drafted a couple years ago that continues to show steady improvement each time we see him.”

“The sky is the limit for him,” Treliving said. “It’s only July, so you have to be careful about leaving here all jacked up about somebody, but we were really happy with Brandon’s game. He is one of those young players that just gets it.”

“He is a determined young defenceman,” added an equally impressed Flames director of scouting Tod Button. “He can make a mistake and still recover because of his skating ability. It’s those second and third efforts that impress me the most.”

“I’ve really been competing hard, using my body, and offering some things that maybe not a lot of other guys can offer.  You can’t find a 6-foot-6 guy too often, so I try to stick out in different ways. Whether it’s scoring goals, getting in on the forecheck, penalty kill, or whatever the case is.”

The youngest playing at the NJEC, the 6’4” Oettinger talked about the trend towards big, athletic goalies and his rivalry with former NTDP teammate and BC recruit Joseph Woll.

“Having him here every day with me to battle and push me, I knew if I couldn’t get the job done that he was going to come in and get it done. We both pushed ourselves really hard to try to get that starting spot, and I know without him, I wouldn’t be here. I learned a ton from him and I’m really excited to be able to play against him the next couple of years.”

Jordan Greenway scored the game-tying goal as Team USA overcame a 3-0 deficit to edge Sweden, 4-3, in the NJECShowcase. Clayton Keller and Kieffer Bellows assisted on Team USA’s first goal, early in the second period.

Next up for Team USA is a Friday match-up with Finland, which defeated Canada, 2-1 in overtime, on Wednesday.

Looking ahead
With five high-end forwards recruited for the 2018 freshman class, BU’s coaches turned their attention to the blue line and secured a commitment from their first defenseman for 2018, St. Andrew’s College standout Ryan O’Connell. Last season, the 6’1”, 174 lb., left shot from Kanata, Ontario, (which BU fans will recognize as the home of the late Scott Cashman) played 55 games for the Saints’ CAHS team, putting up 31 points (4G, 27A) with a +14. He added 11 points in 18 CISAA regular season and playoff games, helping the Saints win the league title.

The previous season, he was Defenceman of the Year for the Ottawa 67s Midget AAA club, scoring 18 points in 22 games and earning a spot in the 2015 OHL Gold Cup competition.

In 2015, O’Connell was an 8th round draft pick of the OHL Missassauga Steelheads, who noted:

Ryan O’Connell was one of the Ottawa Jr. 67’s top defenders throughout his minor midget season, showing impressive mobility, intriguing hockey sense and developing two-way capabilities. This season the left shooting defender has joined St. Andrew’s prep school and has continued to round out his game. A defender that see’s the ice well and makes a strong first pass, O’Connell uses his hockey sense along with sound positional play and an active stick to defend at an effective rate. O’Connell gets up ice well and continues to round out his two-way game.

This past Spring, O’Connell was the Des Moines Buccaneers’ fourth round pick in the USHL Phase 2 draft.

O’Connell joins five forward commits in BU’s 2018 recruit class: Jake Wise, Tyler Weissand Jack DeBoer, who will play for the NTDP U17s next season; Logan Cockerillof the NTDP U18s and Matthew Quercia, who is headed to USHL Sioux Falls.

Former Terrier captain and head coach of the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins Mike Sullivan brought sports’ most famous trophy to BU Wednesday afternoon for a viewing attended by Terrier fans. Sullivan and BU Coach David Quinnwere teammates on the 1986-87 and 1987-88 Terrier teams. Earlier in the day, Sullivan brought the Cup to BC High, where he starred in high school. Connecticut native Nick Bonino, whose strong playoffs helped the Penguins win the Cup, will bring the trophy to Avon Old Farms, his high school alma mater, on Aug. 11.

"To see him win the ultimate prize, you are so happy for him because this is such a difficult profession," Quinn said. "For him to wait as long as he did for a second opportunity, I just always shook my head because I couldn't believe it took this long. As good a coach as he is, he's a better person. It couldn't happen to a better guy."
