Episode 22 of Inside BU Hockey features Bernie Corbett’s interviews with Head Coach David Quinn, senior captain Doyle Somerby, former Terrier standout Danny O’Regan and Grand Forks (ND) Herald hockey writer Brad Schlossman. [Note O’Regan had originally been scheduled for last week’s IBUH ]
Marblehead, Massachusetts native Somerby has been a physical mainstay of the Terrier blueline for four seasons after a standout career at Kimball Union Academy. He captained the KUA squad that was the top-ranked New England prep team for the majority of his senior season. Somerby, who is playing in his third NCAA tournament, was a 2012 draft choice of the New York Islanders.
Schlossman is in his 12thseason covering college hockey for the Herald. In 2016, he was named the top beat writer in the country by Associated Press Sports Editors.
O’Regan was among the most prolific BU scorers in recent years, producing 154 points (66 G, 88A) in exactly 154 games. He was a second-generation Terrier, as his father, Tommy O’Regan, co-captained the 1982-83 squad. At BU, he earned Hockey East All-Rookie Honors, second team All-Star in 2014-15 and first-team All-Star in 2015-16.
Among his most memorable moments at BU were his game-winner against Harvard (video) in double overtime in the 2015 Beanpot, another overtime winner against Yale (video) in the 2015 NCAA regionals and his two-goal effort against BC (video) in Coach Jack Parker’s final win behind the BU bench.
O’Regan began his pro career with the AHL San Jose Barracuda and has scored 52 points in 54 games, making him the league’s top-scoring rookie. He made his NHL debut earlier this season and was recalled to the Sharks again this week.
