Six years to the day of its last national championship, won in Washington D.C., BU faces conference rival Providence for all the marbles. Game time at TD Garden in Boston in 7:30 p.m. ET for the contest that will air on ESPN and TSN2.
Previous All-Hockey East finals were played in 1999 when Maine defeated New Hampshire and in 1995 when the Terriers defeated Maine for their fifth NCAA crown.
Providence has only reached the Frozen Four once before, in 1985 when the Chris Terreri-led Friars lost to RPI in the final, 2-1. PC’s head coach that year was former BU All-American Steve Stirling, who captained the Terriers to their first NCAA title in 1971. That season, Stirling scored a team-best 70 points, tied for fifth best in BU history with Vic Stanfieldand now with Hobey Baker Award winner Jack Eichel.
The game will match two of the biggest and best goaltenders in college hockey. BU’s 6’6” junior Matt O’Connor is 15-0-1 in his last 16 decisions with a 2.13 GAA and a .928 save percentage, while PC’s 6’5” junior Jon Gillies brings a 1.98 GAA and .930 save percentage.
BU’s top scorers are Eichel (70), senior Evan Rodrigues (61) and junior Danny O’Regan (49). The Friars are led by Nick Saracino (38) Shane Luke (31) and Noel Acciari (31).
